Name: Anil & Annabel Davé
Age: 38 & 34
Brand name: Twisted Moustache
Where do you live? Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, soon to be Banbury in Oxfordshire
Why did you choose that name for your brand? When Anil was styling his ‘tache one day, our daughter Scarlett was saying, “Daddy, are you are you twisting your moustache?”. The name just stuck with us from then on.
When did you first start making beard care products? The brand and website originally just started as a lifestyle and grooming blog hobby. About 6 months ago, when we were developing the website, we just thought the brand made for a great beard care product brand. We then started trying out some tests for Anil to try out in April 2018 and the rest is history.
What is your favourite thing about making and selling beard care products? Apart from the fact that it’s amazing to receive great feedback from customers who’ve used our products, it’s being able to do it as a family. It brings us closer together and utilise our individual skills. Even our 4-year-old daughter gets involved with helping to pack orders. That’s what it’s all about.
What do you dislike about making and selling beard care? When we’re trying out new scents, the amount of different essential oils that you have to buy is pretty expensive, especially as you end up not actually using half of them. I think we have about 30 essential oils, that we might not ever use again as they don’t work for us. Also, the costs involved in getting your products safety tested, but this is a legality and is something you just have to do. It’s really annoying knowing that there are brands out there selling products that are clearly not safety tested.
How many hours do you normally spend making beard care in a week? We currently spend around 5 hours a week making products. This is broken up by making new stock of oils and balms as well as trying out new products that we want to launch in the future as we’re still ‘new kids on the block’. I’m saying all this, but we’ve just launched our beard balms, so have just spent the whole weekend finishing off our first batches.
Where do you make the beard care products? We have a utility room in the house that’s solely for making our products, so it’s much easier to keep clean and sterile.
What is your favourite product from your brand? Obviously, we’re going to be bias, as we love all our products. But, we have a soft-spot for “The Handlebar Joker” beard oil, as after weeks and several sessions of blending, this was our first scent and product we made.
What one other beard care brand or brand owner do you admire? As we’re still a new brand, we haven’t really gotten to know any other brand owners personally. A brand we really do admire though is Beardbrand, as their website and content is really polished, which is something that we take inspiration from. Our ultimate goal is to provide a premium experience for our customers, without the premium cost. We also think Rhian at Balbo Beard Co is doing an amazing job and Anil is still using her Sandlewood beard soap that he says is the best beard soap he’s ever used.
What plans do you have for the brand?
As we mentioned before, we want to provide a polished, premium experience without the high price tag. We have loads of new products coming and a few new scents too!
What are your hobbies?
Anil likes Football, and photography. He’s always running around taking photos. I love baking. If I’m not making beard products, then I’m baking cakes. I’ve actually got a wedding cake to make in January!!
Are you married/in a relationship?
Yes, we have been married for just over 5 years now.
What motivates you?
What are your strengths?
We’re both very motivated, determined and extremely creative. We do everything ourselves. The website has been built from scratch, all the artwork, photography is all done by our creative minds! 😊
What are your weaknesses?
When was the last time you were angry?
Last week actually.
We had a delivery of carrier oils and 5 litres of Argan oil had exploded in the box. I was not a happy as these were for our beard balms that were launching 2 days later. It’s safe to say, there is a certain UK courier that really gets on my nerves. (I won’t name who).
If you weren’t making beard care what would you want to do for a job?
Well Anil works full-time in Software Development. If I wasn’t starting this journey into beard care I would probably be opening a tea room as I love baking and making pastries.
What were you like in high school?
We were actually both very shy in school.
Do you talk much?
For both of us, it all depends on who we’re talking too.
Are you introvert or extrovert?
Definitely both more introvert. If we’re with family and friends, then we’re definitely more extroverted, but if we’re with a group of people we don’t know, it takes us a while to come out of our shells.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
Anil would be a Lion because it has the biggest beard in the Animal kingdom. Elephants are my favourite animal, so I’d be an elephant. They’re beautiful and I’d be the biggest land mammal in the world.
How do you handle stress and pressure?
Sunday is always family day. We always take Scarlett to the country park. It’s best stress reliever.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?
Anil, in his boy racing days once crashed a car into a brick wall.
What’s the best holiday you can imagine?
We’re actually planning our dream holiday to Thailand for Anil’s 40th. We can’t wait!
What is your favourite food?
Jerk chicken! I have a killer recipe!
What is your favourite alcoholic drink?
Anil loves Cider. I’m not too big on alcohol, but you might see me on the occasion with an espresso martini in my hand.
What is your most proud achievement?
For both of us it would definitely be the birth of our daughter Scarlett.
What is/are your phobias?
Anil is really scared of heights and I can’t look at wind turbines (long story), which isn’t great when you’re travelling down the M1.
