Name: Tom Dowie

Age: 29

Brand name: Bedfordshire Beard Co

Where do you live? Currently Glasgow but originally from Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire

Why did you choose that name for your brand? I wanted to put Bedfordshire on the map for mens grooming products

When did you first start making beard care products? Early 2014

What is your favourite thing about making and selling beard care products? I like being creative and being hands on. Being able to sell the things I’ve designed and handmade give me so much satisfaction.

What do you dislike about making and selling beard care? All the hoops you have to jump through in regards to testing, notifying the portal & batch paperwork. Also the accounting isn’t very fun either.
How many hours do you normally spend making beard care in a week? I usually spend around 30hrs a week making and labelling our beard care products.

Where do you make the beard care products? We make them in a clean room. It’s dedicated to just cosmetic production to stop contamination. Stainless steel benches, hair nets, aprons & gloves on at all times.

What is your favourite product from your brand? Probably our tobacconist beard balm, I haven’t got bored of it after using it nearly every day for the last few years.

What one other beard care brand or brand owner do you admire? Fine fettle, which is Stu Morse & Danny Baggs. They are super dedicated to keeping everything natural and I love their lanolin based conditioner. We often exchange products .

What plans do you have for the brand? We have recently started working with a fulfilment company so that our customers can receive their products quicker. This should give us more time to expand the brand and gain new distributors worldwide. We really want to be the goto brand for all things men’s grooming.

What are your hobbies? Riding my bike and working/driving my Mk1 Caddy pickup

Are you married/in a relationship? Currently Engaged to the woman of my dreams

What motivates you? The future of hopefully running the business remotely. Also to provide for my family as best I can.

What are your strengths? I’m pretty positive and just crack on with things.

What are your weaknesses? I sometimes worry too much what other people think of me or what I’m doing.

When was the last time you were angry? Probably earlier today

What happened? The builders who just replaced next doors fence stole our garden broom and haven’t brought it back yet even though they’ve been asked… My favourite answer to this question so far!

Tom Dowie

If you weren’t making beard care what would you want to do for a job? I’d be running my mountain bike coaching school full time still. I’m still running it once a month from Feb till October as I love helping people progress with something they love doing.

What were you like in high school? I guess I was ok. I got through school with straight C’s but always wanted to be elsewhere. Either riding my bike or making something with my hands.

Do you talk much? I talk a moderate amount. Sometimes I like the silence and just listening haha.

Are you introvert or extrovert? I guess I sit more as an extrovert but I do have times when I’m introvert.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? A bird of some sort, I’d love to fly.

How do you handle stress and pressure? I try to take as much stress out of my life as possible but if it gets on top of me I tend to head to the gym or get out on my bike for some breathing space.

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? Many things! Many many stupid things on my bikes over the years when I was a professional mountain biker.

What’s the best holiday you can imagine? A holiday consisting of white sandy beaches. My Fiancé & Daughter with me but also access to some amazing mountain bike trails. I also hope the holiday lasts forever too!

What is your favourite food? For ease definitely a pizza, it has to be a Neapolitan pizza though. For something more serious I’d probably go for a chateaubriand steak.

What is your favourite alcoholic drink? I’m a bourbon man, Woodford Reserve is always on the shelf.

What is your most proud achievement? My daughter.

What is/are your phobias? The only one I can really think of is really deep water, like out in the middle of the ocean.
