This is something I didn’t realise before I needed to use a wheelchair and yet it seems so obvious.
I was always the person who wore shorts all year round, yep even in the snow!
People would always ask if I was cold and the answer was “no!”
But since I have been reliant on a wheelchair, damn I get cold and I wrap up warmer than ever. I know part of this has to do with my health etc but it is also because wheelchair users aren’t using their legs or feet and so no warmth is generated by your muscles.
They say that 70% of our heat is generated by our muscles contracting!
So now when I venture outside in weather like today, it is like I am gearing up for an expedition into the arctic zone.
Two pairs of wool socks, thermal long johns, my cargo style wheelchair trousers. The top half is a different matter, that is light clothing as I am generating heat by pushing along.
On a cold Autumn or Winters day, my feet feel like they are in a block of ice and my legs are freezing cold as the muscles are not being used and they become painfully cold and so I have been trying to figure out what else I can do except for the oh so very sexy thermal underwear?
I have seen trousers that have a heating element built in with a rechargeable battery but one looked like it had an element in each knee and in the crotch, I might think I have wet myself!
So maybe I need to look into getting some socks and underwear that is used by skiers or explorers to keep my legs and feet toasty warm this winter.
Of course I could use a blanket … No thank you.
Or even the fleece lined and waterproof wheelchair covers, but again whilst this is perfect for keeping warm and dry, I just couldn’t and I know I am not alone in that thought.
Maybe if I reach 90?
But for now I guess it gives me something else to complain about, not that I need an excuse!
