I use a lightweight wheelchair and its set up is quite tippy, its handy because it’s so easy to pop the front wheels up when hopping up a kerb or step and its been quite a long time since I was last ejected from the chair.

The brakes are gathering dust because I very very rarely put the brakes on but now that my grandson is crawling and he has a fascination with the wheelchair, I have had to start putting the brakes on for his safety as he chambers up and tries to stand on the step.

What I didn’t realise is that this is quite dodgy when transferring into the chair and a couple of days ago I got into the chair and it tipped backwards because the brakes were on, there was nothing I could do as it took me totally by surprise and hit the ground hard.
I managed to hit the base of my head and neck on a wooden box I must have let out some shriek of fear because the family came running, I had to wait a bit before getting up because it hurt so much. Its not the first time I have tipped out backwards by a long shot and usually I don’t get injured but this time it has resulted in a flare up.

  1. Just ejected my Mother when out for a long downtown walk. The casters are the isue. They can grab the very slightest of ‘lips’. She wasn’t injured and now will have a lap restraint.
