It is now over a year since the UK government started to take COVID-19 seriously, and without any doubt the mental health toll of Covid-19 will be and is huge!
If you have read my blog posts before, you will know that my health is far from perfect, I am 95% housebound and so whilst lockdown was no different for me, the mental toll of this virus has affected me.
Dr Charles Shepherd has campaigned for people with ME to be a priority for COVID-19 vaccination and yet many are still being denied the vaccine and have to wait for their age group vaccinations!
The commonest cause of relapse in people with M.E. is getting a new infection.
Our feedback from people over the last 10 months from people who have got M.E. and have caught Covid is that the vast majority have had a significant exacerbation or relapse of their symptom.
We have got plenty of GP’s who are placing their M.E. patients into Group but at the same point we are getting GP’s and Clinical Commissioning Groups and Primary Care Networks saying that people with M.E. cannot be placed into Group 6.
The ME Association has been arguing for several weeks that the rules on Covid vaccination do give doctors the discretion on whether to put their patients with M.E. forward for inoculation.Dr Charles Shepherd
My wife had her vaccine a couple of weeks ago because she is my carer and this is the case for anyone who cares for someone and yet often the person who is being cared for, well they are denied priority vaccination.
Yesterday I finally received a text from the NHS saying I could now book to have the vaccine.
However, the online service still says I am not eligible and when I rang 119 as advised, they said the same thing!
I phoned my GP surgery, my wife had done this when she received the vaccine test and it was booked for her, I was told by the receptionist that they don’t do it anymore.
When I explained that I was more vulnerable to Covid-19 and the resulting symptoms and yet the GP had not recognised this, her wonderful response was
Well you are just one of many!GP surgery receptionist. Central Surgery, Southchurch Boulevard, Southend-on-Sea
I hold up my hands and admit that I was hurt, I was angry and ended the call with “Excuse me while I go and queue up to die!“
I personally think her response was cold, it was inconsiderate and surely someone in that role should
The truth is not I am not scared of death, after all, it awaits us all.
I am scared of catching Covid-19, being taken into hospital and being alone with no one to fight my rights, because disabled people have become expendable during this pandemic!
I know that the mental health toll of Covid-19 is going to be greater than anyone realises. Our already previously swamped mental health services will be ill-equipped to help.
GP Surgery rang and accused me of posting on their Facebook wall with unsavoury language, the fact I posted on my profile on Facebook was not understood.
The Icing on this shit cake is that the vaccination text was sent to me by mistake!
You could not make this up if you tried.
Will they care that my mental health has suffered?
We all know the answer to that!
I was told to email the local CGG and did so CC’ing the GP surgery. I later received an email with a Covid Vaccine appointment and so it seems that possibly my upset has been noted!?
Let us end with a song!
