It doesn’t seem that long ago when I thought that I would never use all of the available Ethernet ports on a router, now I don’t have enough!
So many products are now connected to the internet and whilst the majority have wifi enabled, you can’t beat plugging in via an ethernet cable.
We are with Virgin and I found the router they supplied to be lacking in many areas and so I use that on ‘Modem Mode’ and a connected TP Link router supplies the wifi and ethernet connections.
There are four available ethernet ports but that is now no longer enough as I need to connect;
- Fire TV box
- Virgin V3 box
- Philips Hue Bridge
- An ethernet plug to give ethernet to my daughters room
- X Box
And so rather than keep on unplugging and plugging in as needed, I looked on Amazon to see how much an Ethernet switch would be.
And I was pleasantly suprised!
I found the TP-Link TL-SF1005D 5-Port 10/100 Mbps Desktop Ethernet Switch on Prime which was same day delivery for only £6.99
It comes with a plugged power supply and as you can see in the above image, it offers five ethernet ports.
It offers speeds of 10/100 Mbps but there are verisons available that offer speeds up to a Giogabit.
Of course you will be using one of those to connect to your router and so that then gives you four free ports.
But that is okay as I have four ports on my router, plus the five here and taking out the connection between the router and the switch, that gives me seven ports to use.
But there are others available that offer eight ports like the one above if that isn’t enough and the cost is only 20p dearer at £7.19 but this idiot didn’t see that one! (Click image for link to Amazon)
So now all of my ethernet needs have been met, well for now and I expect soon I will be kicking myself for not purchasing the 8 port switch.
TP Link produce some very good products at a reasonable price and they serve the needs of the average home user!
