I was sent the Morgan’s Beard Softening Elixir from befaf who are a 3rd party reseller of beard care and stock many of the well known brands.

I make a point of not looking at the ingredients in the products until I come to review them, this is so that I am not somehow influenced by what I read!

All I knew was that the Morgan’s Beard Softening Elixir had a Mandarin, Bergamot & Ginger scent and contained Argan Oil. This does always set me thinking though, why say it is xxxx scent and contains Argan Oil? Is it because that sounds good but the full list wouldn’t?

Anyway, the scent is very subtle, a very slight citrus scent but when I applied the Morgan’s Beard Softening Elixir, my beard felt instantly very soft or so I thought.

I asked my wife’s opinion and she said it did feel soft but it also didn’t and she is right.

So what is going on?

Well yes the elixir contains Argan oil but it also contains two other ingredients, Cyclopentasiloxane and Dimethicone.

Cyclopentasiloxane is mainly used as a conditioner, a delivery agent, lubricant and solvent. It gives a silky and slippery feeling to the touch and also acts a mild water-repellent by forming a protective barrier.

Dimethicone is a silicon-based polymer that is used as skin protectant, and skin and hair conditioner.

This then made sense, I realised why my beard felt soft but not at the same time and that is because the elixir has put a silicon layer on my beard and so it feels soft but it is just silky smooth from these two ingredients.

It is I think a strange sensation, I wouldn’t describe it having softened my beard just made my hands glide over it easier!

The Morgan’s Beard Softening Elixir comes in a 30ml bottle with a pump top to dispense the oil and costs £11.99 from befaf.
