Name: Mike Thompson
Age: 49 years young
Brand name: Manmane
Where do you live? Gower, Swansea
Why did you choose that name for your brand? Because it tells people what we do.. very simply and I like one word identity.
When did you first start making beard care products? 2013… started selling 2015
What is your favourite thing about making and selling beard care products? The feedback we get after spending so long perfecting it. I love what I do and that in itself makes me happy.
What do you dislike about making and selling beard care? Organic Shea butter is a fantastic ingredient but gets everywhere
How many hours do you normally spend making beard care in a week? 15-20 producing, 10 selling face to face and untold hours dedicated to online duties.
Where do you make the beard care products? Oils at home, Balms waxes in my mothers massive kitchen and I collaborate with a local Artisan offsite for our Eco Soy “Mandles”
What is your favourite product from your brand? I have formulated all our products to my taste so I like them all but my partner and right hand woman , Kirsty, loves The Beacons. I use balm due to the length of my beard and take greatest pleasure using this product because I know the work taken to make an ethical alternative to Beeswax /Lanolin products which is both superior (IMHO) and smells amazing. Working with nature rather than against it is what we are all about.
What one other beard care brand or brand owner do you admire? Because I know what goes in to creating a brand using natural ingredients I applaud anyone who makes the effort. Due to your extensive reviews it would be hard to pick just one…sorry….but well done guys and girls you know who you are.
What plans do you have for the brand? We are in the process of diversifying into the unisex skin care market. In the future we are hoping to be able to produce a cruelty free cologne/perfume range also, however, this is a long road and expensive to do it to UK/EU standards.
What are your hobbies? Being half Welsh/Irish mix I love everything to do with Rugby . I have a love for animals and my two “Jacksies” ( Jack Russell/ Dachshund mix) rascals take a lot of my time. I am just a normal guy in the evenings occasionally enjoying a few beers watching “comfy” TV if that makes sense.
Are you married/in a relationship? I have had the pleasure of being with my fiance for 13 years and have 2 children from my previous marriage……oh….and FIFI and Belle my little furry troublemakers
What motivates you? My Brand, Our ethnics and helping others.
What are your strengths? Determination, it’s not ease sometimes to swim against the tide with my views but I am very determined without being “preachy” . I am also very laid back and easy going, and I am told I can be hilarious at times with a wicked sense of humour.
What are your weaknesses? Again sometimes I can be horizontally easy going about small issues like time and money .
When was the last time you were angry? What happened? I don’t generally get angry, but cruelty of any kind and selfishness wakes up the beast in me.
If you weren’t making beard care what would you want to do for a job? I have spent 30 plus years in retail and can’t see past making customers happy but if I was to choose an alternative I would go into the catering . I would love to produce healthy food without compromising on taste or enjoyment.
What were you like in high school? I was OK , loving sciences , but left to early.
Do you talk much? I think I have mentioned I am half Irish
Are you introvert or extrovert? Extrovert once I have found my feet in a given situation , I get on with NEARLY everyone and I like to look at the lighter side of things.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? Any kind of bird, free to roam and follow the seasons.
How do you handle stress and pressure? I have a high pressure management background so there isn’t much that phases me. Unfairness and dishonesty can bring me down though.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? I spat on a live filament light bulb when I was a kid to see what would happen …..I still have the scars
What’s the best holiday you can imagine? Las Vegas….has to be
What is your favourite food? Three Bean Chilli , Lime rice and Garlic Bread….washed down with fiery
What is your favourite alcoholic drink? Jameson’s Whisky with Stones Ginger wine Mac. Not for the fainthearted.
What is your most proud achievement? My two children growing up into fine human beings
What is/are your phobias? Being trapped in a confined space or situation I am not in control of……add in a flapping bird and I am mush
