Who is behind the brand? Beardlab

4 min read

This time it’s Luke Hymas owner of Beardlab

Beardlab

Name: Luke Hymas

Age: 29.

Brand name: Beard Lab.

Where do you live? Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Why did you choose that name for your brand? Because I am a bit of a science geek and I was pretty into skepticism and science and fit my personality.

When did you first start making beard care products? Almost 5 years ago.

What is your favourite thing about making and selling beard care products? The community. The bearded folks are an amazing community and do so much for charity and just bumping into a random bearded chap gives you an instant common ground and ice breaker.

What do you dislike about making and selling beard care? Bad practice, deception, telling people certain oils have health benefits through just smelling them and things like seeing people sell beard growth products. ( These don’t work )

How many hours do you normally spend making beard care in a week? A lot. Anywhere from 20 hours and up.

Where do you make the beard care products? This is a tough one. I make some in the comfort of my work space at home and others I get made at a specialist cosmetics testing lab like a contract packer where they mix and create everything to my specifications which I then approve afterwards.

What is your favourite product from your brand? It changes all too often but currently it is my Beard Butter.

What one other beard care brand or brand owner do you admire? I admire a few! There are the big guys from BeardBrand which do great stuff especially on YouTube and folks like Dave Green and Mrs Jack at Mariner Jack who have great ideas and amazing attention to detail.

What plans do you have for the brand? My plans for the brand are currently in motion, I want Beard Lab to be Unisex, I want anyone to be able to pop on the site and be able to find a product fit for them. Just because you don’t have a beard doesn’t mean you can’t take part in the Beard Lab experience.

What are your hobbies? I like Cooking, Reading, Movies, Magic and spending time with my daughters.

Are you married/in a relationship? I am not married but in a long term relationship.

What motivates you? I like the thought of being able to provide for my family whilst also spending as much time with them as possible.

What are your strengths? I like to learn and think if I put my mind to it and focus I can learn anything I want to.

What are your weaknesses? My memory is a big weakness, I have always had a bad memory since I was a child.

When was the last time you were angry?

What happened? You want to know my secret… I am always angry. But seriously I am pretty laid back until something sets me off and then I am a rage monster. I don’t like to be but sometimes its best to let the rage out once in a while.

If you weren’t making beard care what would you want to do for a job? I don’t know. I am almost 30 and I still couldn’t pick if I had to. I have too many interests. I guess Magician.

What were you like in high school? I was the weird metal head guy who had a beard.

Do you talk much? It depends. I guess as with everyone it depends on the environment and company present. I don’t really want to state the same old Barnum statement but there we go. I’m quiet in person until there is an interesting topic.

Are you introvert or extrovert? Introvert.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? An Octopus. They are mega smart creatures and get to frolic in the ocean and have all these cool features.

How do you handle stress and pressure? I eat. A lot.

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? I don’t remember.

What’s the best holiday you can imagine? Vegas with the family watching all the magic shows!

What is your favourite food? Curry!

What is your favourite alcoholic drink? I don’t drink alcohol. But I love me some Root Beer, Ginger Beer or Pistachio Lassi! Yum!

What is your most proud achievement? My beautiful daughters.

What is/are your phobias? Being stuck in the ocean adrift or drowning. I can’t actually swim.
