We have a 6 year old Chiweenie, that is a Miniature Dachshund with a splash of Chihuahua thrown in to the mix.
His name is Jasper and he was the runt of the litter and, well we love him despite the fact he is an odd little thing!
We have been buying a Royal Canin breed specific dry food from Pets at Home that is tailored for Dachshunds as he is apparently mainly Dachshund as his Mum was a miniature Dachshund and his Dad also was but had a quarter of Chihuahua.
I had seen the adverts on Facebook for the Tails dog food, it said that the food was tailored to your dogs breed, age and activity levels. I had just scrolled past again and again because I assumed that it was highly likely to be way more expensive than what we purchased.
We currently pay £12.49 for 1.5kg of the Royal Canin food.
But recently I was intrigued by Tails and saw they had a free trial with £1 delivery and so I finally clicked on the link!
I signed up using my email and then was taken through a questionaire about Jasper.
- Breed or breed mix
- Activity level
- Health Conditions
- What food they like, Chicken/beef etc
Then you are shown their unique recipe with a breakdown of ingredients, nutrition etc and you can set the intervals at which you would like to recieve the food.
It worked out to be less per month delivered and the trial period bag was 1.3kg of food and so we would be getting 2.2kg of food for £12.24!
Jasper was typically Jasper, I mixed a small amount of the Tails food in with his food and waited.
When he eats he will grab a mouthful of his food from the bowl in the kitchen, run into the lounge and drop them on the carpet and then eat them individually and then return for more and more.
What he then did was eat all his old food and leave the new, but we gave it time but all that happened was we were picking up the new food off of the floor.
So I decided to make the food seem interesting and give it like a treat, but no and we tried and tried many different ways of getting him to eat this new food. After all it was better for him as it was tailored for him, his age, the fact he gets itchy skin etc but of course our dog is weird and a creature of habit.
So I contacted Tails and said that I was cancelling and told them what was happening and they then said that maybe it was flavour and so they gave us another free trial batch.
They could not have been more helpful!
I was hopeful, I wanted him to have a better food and also because I can’t work because of my health, being cheaper and not having to go to the shop to get it was a big bonus.
But no! He was not having it, he point blank refused and even when we made it the only food on offer, he decided he would rather not eat at all and just sit there looking at me, shaking and with the poor me eyes.
And of course I gave in!
My sister was visiting and she has a Chihuahua and so I was telling her about the food and she took it home to see if her dog would eat it. Was it just Jasper?
Her dog could not get enough of the Tails food and even chose to eat the Tails dry food over wet food!
Success. Well for them!
So despite our stupid and stubborn hound refusing to eat it, I can actually recommend the Tails tailored dog food subscription service. The customer service is first class and the food despite my dog refusing it, is very good quality.
