Viking Beard Company – About Us & Our Ethics
The word Viking is believed to be Norse for ‘pirate’. They may have gained a reputation in history and folklore for invading, pillaging and killing, but Vikings were far more interested in trading than raiding!
We too prefer to trade than raid and like the Vikings we seek only the finest goods. This is why we use only 100% natural ingredients with no parabens or other nasties in any of our hand-blended, award-winning creations.
Based in Gainsborough, close to the Rivers Trent and Humber, famous for their connection to Sweyn Forkbeard and his son, Canute, and handmade by our dedicated Alchemy-Elves in the ancient town of Jorvik with its world famous Viking heritage, The Viking Beard Company was conceived in 2015.
As animal lovers ourselves, we do not test any of our products on our furry friends. Our Founder and Chief Alchemist, Viking Sallie, instead relies on her extensive knowledge of 100% natural, organic and cruelty free ingredients to produce our creations.
In addition all our suppliers are bound by our Terms Of Trading and promise to never conduct any form of animal testing. This encompasses any 3rd party products they may stock.
We do, however, have a small number of volunteer human guinea pigs (or Odin’s Ravens as we refer to them) who test and evaluate new products for us but this is the only form of testing we carry out. They’re all a tad nutty and are expendable anyway!
PALM OIL FREE
Originally from West Africa but now grown wherever heat and rainfall are abundant including Asia and North and South America, palm oil production is largely unregulated and its production has been shown to massively contribute to habitat degradation, deforestation, indigenous rights abuses and climate change in the countries where it is produced as land and forests are destroyed to cater for increasing global demand.
According to the WWF an area of 300 football fields is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production and this is pushing many species to extinction and having a major impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. The UN estimates that up to 5,000 orangutans are killed each year due to the demand for palm oil with 90% of their habitat already having being destroyed in just the last 20 years.
We promise that none of our products will ever contain palm oil and, just as for our animal testing policy, we will not trade with a supplier whom stock any products containing palm oil.
All our products are made from 100% natural ingredients and contain no parabens or other nasties including artificial colours or fragrances.
Some products (beard soaps and shampoos) may have a few long, unpronounceable and unfamiliar names on the list of ingredients but don’t worry – these are all derived from ingredients found in nature and are only used as an emulsifier or foaming agent to either bind the ingredients or to give a nice lather.
“I’ve never worked so hard in a job before. Or had so much fun!” -Maiden Andrea (Head Postie Elf)
For millions of people in the UK this isn’t a reality and they have to make stark choices between the bare essentials of living. It’s a sad fact that the media has evened coined a term for these hard-working people: JAM’s – ‘Just About Managing’.
We treat our close-knit team like family and reward them with a wage far in excess of the Living Wage to ensure that not only can they cover the cost of living but have plenty of Viking hacksilver each month for themselves and their families to enjoy a great quality of life.
In addition we offer 6 weeks paid holiday, free enrolment to a private healthcare scheme, free monthly public transport passes for team members who do not have their own transport, flexible working hours to enable working around family commitments, interest-free loans should they have an unexpected emergency expense, free ‘liquid refreshments’ when we visit our fave mead tavern after a hard Friday’s toil in our longhouses and frequent weekend barbeques during the summer months to which their families are also invited.
We all have similar musical tastes (we’re mainly goth/metal-heads – No ‘Beliebers’ here!) so when one of our fave bands is playing a gig we treat all our team to tickets, travel and, if it’s a bit of a trek, accommodation.
We understand that the most valuable assets of any business walk out of the building each evening and we want to ensure they look forward to returning the next day. This makes moral sense. It makes business sense. A happy and valued team is a productive one.
